 PROPOSAL

Outline Proposal for an Archaeological and Historic Landscape Survey of Memorial Common, part of Chailey Commons, Chailey, East Sussex to be undertaken  by the Archaeology Group of volunteers, Chailey Commons Society.

Purpose of survey

The aim of the survey is to improve the understanding of the historical uses, features, tracks and roads relating to Memorial Common over time, and to make this information available to the Society and members of the public who are interested in the history of this very important nature reserve.

Members of the Archaeology Group of Chailey Commons Society will conduct a preliminary archaeological and historical assessment and analysis of Memorial Common and its environs, based on a co-ordinated study of related documents, maps and field study of the extant archaeology.

 Methodology

For guidance, the Archaeology Group will consult with professional archaeologists who have already carried out some work in the area, with the aim of developing an appropriate methodology for the work.  This may result in a second stage proposal for a more detailed study, and an application for funding.

The preliminary work will involve identifying and preparing good quality and well-presented material, alongside other survey reports as an educational resource and as a basis for future funding bids for a more in-depth study. The tasks will include desk research and recording all visible features, via photography and map-making, and documentary references to the proposed area.

 Timing

The Archaeology Group intend to carry out preliminary work and consultation of available documentation between November 2007 and March 2008.   Preliminary findings will be presented to the Chailey Commons Society Committee at the end of this period, to provide a basis for discussion about next steps.
